There is still much uncertainty surrounding the terms of the UK’s Brexit deal with the EU and in particular for EU citizens working in the UK. For some months now, the government has been urging employers to protect their EU citizens as there had been no clarity over residency rights before the final Brexit deal is signed.
So, it is with great relief that the Home Office has now launched a new toolkit to help employers and their EU staff understand and apply for UK settlement as Brexit approaches.
The CIPD has also welcomed this development, stating that: “The CIPD welcomes the publication of a new toolkit by the Home Office to help employers support and inform their EU staff on how to acquire ‘settled’ status in the UK after Brexit. The move comes as a survey of HR practitioners by the CIPD reveals nearly 9-in-10 say securing settled status — which gives EU citizens the same rights to live and work in the UK as they currently enjoy — would help their EU staff commit to staying.
The CIPD and its members have played a key part in shaping the overall registration process through the institute’s role on the Home Office’s employers’ forum on post-Brexit immigration as well as focus group participation by its members.” Read more here.
At HCHR we are encouraging local businesses who employ EU citizens to make use of the toolkit and to provide any feedback possible to the CIPD to help influence the way forward on a Brexit immigration policy that works for both employers and employees alike.
